Andy Hallett 1975-2009 RIP

Angel is one of my all time favorite shows and this is sad news indeed.

From E!
"Andy Hallett, who starred as Lorne ("the Host") on the TV series Angel, died of heart failure last night at age 33, according to his longtime agent and friend Pat Brady. The actor passed away at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with heart disease, with his father Dave Hallett by his side."

Review: Let the Right One In (2008)

Let the Right One In (2008)

Director: Tomas Alfredson
Starring: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar, Henrik Dahl

"Please Oskar... Be me, for a little while."

Going in I was hoping for the best, because a movie as hyped as this one has been online, well can lead to disappointment. Not living up to all the expectation placed upon it. Happily, This this film did.

The story of two lonely souls. One is twelve year old boy Oskar played by Kåre Hedebrant. The other Eli played by Lina Leandersson is a girl (maybe) who in her words is twelve more or less. A love story of sorts, but not it the Twilight sort of way.

Oskar lives in a small town in Sweden in 1981. A child of divorced parents he's tormented by bullies on a daily basis. One snowy night he meets Eli who's just moved in next door with and older man. What follows is at times touching, haunting and quietly hypnotic story. It doesn't answer many of the questions you'll have and I love that. How old is Eli exactly? Is she using Oskar? Setting him up to be her new servant like the older man with her? Or does she really love him? The film leaves it up to you to interpret.

The director Tomas Alfredson does a good job of making you feel the isolation and cold of the winter setting at the same time making you feel the warmth of these two characters. Another thing I was impressed with is the way he staged the massacare at the pool at the films end. It was done with very little effects but it has lots of impact.

There's many little touches that really make this film a great vampire film. You never see her fangs. The way her face ages in a couple of scenes. How she says she's forgotten how to feel cold. The way her eyes glow in the dark in one scene. Such a small thing but well done. How we get to see what happens when a vampire enters a place it was invited. The way a cat reacts to Eli's presence.

Which leads me to the only thing in the film that bugged me. A very fake looking cat attack on someone that will make you cringe for all the wrong reasons.

Another thing the film leaves to you to decide is does it end happily or sadly. I felt the ending was a happy one for these two characters.

The night He didn't come home

There was a time when the Halloween films were some of my all time favorites. I'd watch them every October. Then this past year something happened... October rolled around and I just didn't give a shit about Micheal Myers and his Haddenfield antics anymore.

I'm not sure what caused it. Was it the consent re-release of the first film with different dvd editions or that remake. Maybe it was the news of the sequel to the remake. Maybe it was the fact that almost every time there's a poll online as to what the best horror movie is its Halloween.

Now Halloween is a good movie...but great. I don't know. Now if your talking great horror films I think Night of the Living Dead or The Exorcist. Or maybe Dario Argento's Suspiria. How about Psycho. Texas Chainsaw Massacre or John Carpenter's remake of The Thing which is his best film. But Halloween? I don't know I'm just tired of it. Not the third one though...that's Shape free plus it's got Tom Atkins and Stonehenge.

I'm not saying I sucks far from it and the rest of the series has it's charms. Hell I own them on dvd, even the crummy remake. I've got novels of a couple of the films. Comic books, an action figure and cds of the soundtracks.

Maybe in a few years I'll pull out one of the Halloween movies and pop it in the dvd player and be able to enjoy it. But for now.

I guess what it boils down to is as Mr. Christan Bale put it, and I'm paraphrasing... Me and The Shape are done Professionally. He's a nice guy. But we are through.

Review:Blood Sisters (1987)

BLOOD SISTERS (1987)

About ninety minutes of bad hair, bad fashion, bad acting, breast mashings, cheesy shenanigans, ghost whores and a whole lot of staring. I've watched this thing three times. Once by myself, once with a friend and once with the commentary by the great Joe Bob Briggs. And its defiantly better viewed with a crowd.

Not sure how there can be so many ghost whores roaming the place when only two people die in the prologue but that is the "charm" of Blood Sisters.

That's pretty much my face though out this film. Oh and Elizabeth Rose who played nerd girl Bonnie in the picture above...I think I love you.
