Review: My Bloody Valentine (1981)
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
"Beware of what you make fun of, you little asshole!"
The legend of Harry Warden still lives thanks to a 3-D remake and (finally) the release of an uncut version on DVD.
On Valentine Day, 1960. In of all places Valentine Bluffs there's an explosion at the Hanniger mine which leaves five miners trapped below, their supervisors having abandoned their posts anxious to get The town's annual Valentine's Day dance. Only one of the miners is found alive by the rescue team, Harry Warden who is found eating the body parts of his fellow miners to survive. Harry spends some time in mental hospital before he returns to town a year later on Valentine's Day to get bloody revenge on the two supervisors and warning to town to never hold another Valentine's Day dance. If they do, he'll return to town to kill anyone who dares celebrate Valentine's Day. Twenty years later. 1980 to be exact the curse of Harry is a bogeyman story and the town is getting ready to hold another dance. Then the killing stars again. Has Harry returned as he said or is it long suffering TJ who's just come back to town and found his old girlfriend hooked up with his best friend Axel.
Released in 1981, the same year as Friday the 13th Part 2. My Bloody Valentine is from the golden age of slasher films. And as such it feels fresher then some of the later movies in the slasher cycle. it benefits from having a cool setting, the mine. And characters that aren't the usual horny party crazed teens. the characters are certainly horny and want to party but in a nice touch are blue coller miners in their mid to late twenties. Also theirs no bitch, slut or asshole type that usually populate the characters. The finale takes place in mine shafts and tunnels and adds a nice creepy air to the stalk and slash. This is one of my all time favorite horror films.
When it came out in theaters it was trimmed of most of gore which thanks to Lion's gate and the magic of DVD is back and while the footage isn't in the best of shape it's great to be able to see it in the film or as deleted scenes. And as a nice bonus the theatrical cut of the movie is included. But after seeing the uncut version you won't want to go back
