Movies I love: Deep Red (1975)
"I can feel death...in this room...I feel...a presence...a twisted mind sending me thoughts...murderous, perverted thoughts!"
This was my introduction to the giallo. The quintessential giallo filled with with repressed memories, madness and graphic murder-set-pieces. I rented it under the title of The Hatchet Murders. After Tenebre, this is and Suspiria are tied as my second favorite Dario Argento film.
It really is a film that gets better with each viewing. Knowing who the killer is and what sort of twists happen ahead of time does not hurt the film in anyway. There's so much there packed into every frame that something new ketches your eye. Such as the great performance by David Hemmings. I love the fact that his character is not only a bit of a sexist but also quite scared. Not at all the dashing hero type. Daria Nicolodi's spunky reporter is straight out of a Howard Hawks's film. There's something about her character (That damn car of hers!), and her partnership (Romance) with Hemmings that I find grows more engaging with each viewing.
The stylistic camera moves and insane editing techniques that Argento employs coupled with that amazing Goblin score make it hard to not watch Deep Red. Heck after watching it agian and then looking for some screen captures I wanted to watch the damn movie another time. It's almost impossible to resist.
For a truly very incredible piece on Deep Red , read "The principles of association", it's a great read.
