The Slashers

Growing up watching horrors movies, I was into the Universal and Hammer films. Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolf man and The Phantom were all favorites of course. But they were like old friends. I can't say I was ever scared of them. They were like good friends that showed up on the weekend (On TV) and I could hang out with them for a couple of hours. But sometime in the '80s horror films stared to change for me. They became, well...scary. I started seeing these commercials for these films about maniacs running around with sharp implements killing anyone in their way. Usually Teenagers. The first one of these types of films I saw was a late night cable viewing of Halloween II. Then came Alone In The Dark. Gone were the feel good times of Drac and Stein. I wasn't going to run into them putting the garbage out at night. But some yahoo in a mask with a really big knife and a grudge? That seemed freaking possible! Another thing my young mind loved about these films...nudity! It was almost guaranteed!

So began my love of the often maligned genre of the slasher film. Probability one of my all time favorite genres of horror film. I'll go out of my way to see one. Especially one from the 80's, good or bad does't matter, gotta see it. From My Bloody Valentine to Girls Nite Out, with some I Know What You Did Last Summer throwen in for good measure. If it wasn't for a big clamshell vhs called The Hatchet Murders (Deep Red). Hatchet Murders? Sounded like a slasher to me, little did I know. I might not had gotten into the Giallo and Dario Argento otherwise.

I hope to make The Slashers an ongoing feature as I review, discuss, worship, and sometimes bitch about slasher films.

Richard of Cinema Somnambulist will be covering the top 5 one hit slasher films. Check it out! He's already off to a great start.

And now some trailers...
