Carla Gugino is an actress who stands out in any film or television show she has ever been in. Yet, she has never made it to that A level of stardom, which I cannot fathom.
I first saw her in Robert Rodriguez’ Spy Kids playing the spy mom Ingrid Cortez. She really stood out in her portrayal of Karen Sisco in the TV series of the same name. She had a real chemistry playing opposite Robert Forster as her Dad in that show. Another short-lived TV series that she stared in was Threshold, where she played Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey who is brought in by the US Government to head a team of scientists to analyze an extra-terrestrial object found by the U.S. Navy. This was an excellent SF show with a strong cast that was very similar to the currently more successful Fringe. Her small role as the “dyke” Lucille in Sin City is memorable for her nude scene, but her portrayal of shock at being locked in a room full of the killer’s beheaded victims is outstanding. Carla’s theatrical films since have been hit or miss: Rise: Blood Hunter was awful, despite the nudity, sex and gore. I loved her in Watchmen as Sally Jupiter. She was wasted in both Night at the Museum and Race to Witch Mountain. She did have a fairly meaty role as Dr. Vera Gorski in Sucker Punch, which she also played a madam-dance instructor in the primary fantasy world.
At the age of forty she still looks fantastic, but Hollywood will no doubt start handing out more Mom and wife roles to her. Still, I hold out hope that directors like Zack Snyder will continue to give her more challenging and – yes sexy – roles!
Wonderful comment. Thank you. I remember being struck by her in the film Snake Eyes. It's always a pleasure to see her turn up in a film or on a TV show.
